The risks of painting franchises and why you should trust someone local
Many painting franchises promote how long the brand has existed, but that doesn’t necessarily reflect the experience of the local franchise owner. The brand might be 20 years old — or even 5 — but the individual franchise location may have only been operating a few years, and the franchisee themselves may have even less experience in the trade.
Buying a franchise doesn’t create experience. It’s similar to buying a chicken finger franchise — it doesn’t make you a chef. Franchise systems primarily train owners in sales, marketing, and lead generation, not in the technical aspects of coatings, preparation systems, or field application.
Many of these companies entered the market during the housing boom around COVID, when the industry saw a surge of new operators. Around here we often jokingly call them “pandemic painters.”
A number of these operations function primarily as sales organizations that subcontract the work, pushing jobs to be completed as quickly and cheaply as possible. That race to the bottom drives pricing down and leaves experienced painters constantly educating homeowners on the difference between speed and quality.
It also introduces risk when the franchise owner isn’t from the Southeast and hasn’t worked in these conditions for years. Florida homes deal with heat, humidity, moisture movement, and water intrusion, and many properties are built with stucco — a substrate that requires specific preparation and coating systems. Those conditions take time and real field experience to understand.
Real knowledge in this trade comes from years on ladders, running sprayers, diagnosing coating failures, understanding substrates, and working through Florida’s climate challenges — not from purchasing a franchise license.
Homeowners should always ask who is actually performing the work, whether the painters are employees or subcontractors, and how long the people applying the coatings have truly been in the trade.
